New babies are sweet little gumdrops sent from heaven. Except when they poop. Or cry all night for no reason. Or spit up in your hair. That’s why I prefer being an awesome aunt. I get to sweep in, get my snuggles and get out when things get messy. New parents, who undoubtedly love their little gumdrops more than anything, except perhaps sleep, don’t get that luxury.
This holiday season, take a moment to pamper new parents. If you’re not sure what to get them, never fear! Awesome Aunt (that’s me) is here to help with tips to find the perfect gift for new parents this year.
1. Buy for the Baby
New parents will really appreciate a practical gift for the baby. Check to see if there are any items left on the parents’ wish list or registry. If that’s not an option, you can never go wrong with baby essentials like diapers, bath accessories and bottles. You also don’t have to spend a fortune on expensive stuff that will only be used a year or two – shop around online for gently used baby gear. That way, you’ll be getting something like-new that new parents need, and be a green shopper to boot. Everyone wins!
2. Give the Gift of (Your) Time
Now, they would never admit it, but the best gift a new parent could ever receive is the gift of time. A blissful hour to sleep or actually shower. Offer to babysit so new parents can catch up on much needed rest. If you’re worried about entertaining the baby, bring along a plush stuffed animal or two. They’re safe for babies to play with, and don’t take up much space in the nursery. You’ll be the holiday hero, and a frugal yet thoughtful gift-giver. All you gave was your time, but to new parents, that’s worth more than gold!
3. Pamper New Parents
As I mentioned before, new moms and dads don’t have time to bathe or eat or sleep, because they’re devoting all their time to being the best parents they can be. This holiday season, treat them to something they otherwise wouldn’t purchase for themselves. Whether that’s a new coffeemaker to replace their old one or new bedding to make those hard-won naps extra special, new parents will thank you for the pampering.
4. Get Creative and Crafty
You don’t have to be Martha Stewart to DIY a beautiful nursery project. If you’re tight on funds at the holidays, making a gift can be an inexpensive and incredibly thoughtful alternative to a store-bought gift. New parents will appreciate the gesture, and love that they have a handmade keepsake they can bring out each holiday season, reminding them year after year of that special first holiday with a new baby.
The miracle of life literally blows my mind – you only have nine months to prepare for a tiny human for whom you are forever responsible. That’s a lot of pressure! At the holidays, it’s especially important to pamper new parents. Don’t forget to remind them that they’re doing an awesome job by giving them a great gift this holiday season.
