6 Family Staycation Ideas to Try This Fall

There’s no better way to make lasting memories than with a family vacation. However once school starts up and everyone’s schedules become busier, it can be hard to take time for a true family vacation. Instead, why not try a family staycation?

Staycations are every bit as fun and memorable, but a little (or a lot) more friendly to your bank balance. Plus, there are so many different ways to spend a staycation! Here are six great staycation ideas the whole family can enjoy this fall.

1. A Weekend Camping Trip

Here’s the thing: campfire tales and s’mores are every bit as good even when you’re close to home. If you’re lucky enough to have some campgrounds nearby, you can make an afternoon or night of it, but you don’t even need to go that far. Gather your gear and set up camp in your backyard or even inside the house. Leave your electronic devices behind, enjoy the crisp fall air, and break up your routine for a night!

2. Home Film Festival

Have a favorite film series–or just a lot of favorite movies you’d like to revisit? Break out the projector, set up an outdoor theater in your backyard, and have a weekend film festival at home. You can invite friends or neighbors, cozy up with blankets and snacks, and make a night out of it! Designing and printing up a film “schedule” could make for a fun activity for parents and kids to do together.

3. Check Into a Hotel or B&B

Not every staycation has to mean staying home. If you want to give the whole family an evening away without leaving town, find a hotel or local and quaint B&B that offers kid-friendly activities or playground areas and enjoy a night away. Order room service (or dine at the hotel restaurant), hit the pool, and let the maid service clean up afterward! You’ll save money by not having to travel far, but you’ll still feel like you’re on a true vacation!

4. Explore Your Area

Is there someplace in your home town or city you haven’t seen? A landmark, park or area you don’t know anything about? Try getting everyone together and becoming tourists in your own city for the day. You can take pictures and learn about local history, try a new restaurant or neighborhood you haven’t been to, or go to an event like a concert or sports game. Think you have seen it all in your city? Try going to a neighboring town and exploring all it has to offer. You’ll be surprised at how much there is to do and see, even close to home!

5. Get Into Nature

Even if you don’t go far, fall is a great time to get out into the brisk air. A day’s hike along nearby trails is always a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the scenery and changing leaves. Even a family bike trek around town can make for a great staycation idea!

6. Make a Movie

Finally, one of the more creative staycation ideas, and one that ties some of the above ideas together, is to make a family movie! Grab the video camera (or even a smartphone) and document your weekend–or add in some fiction or drama for a fun twist. The family can edit and put the finishing touches on the film together–and maybe even make it part of that weekend film festival!

At BLINQ, we’re big believers in finding creative and budget-friendly ways to experience life. So no matter what you choose to do, by trying one of these family-friendly staycation ideas, you’ll be sure to get in some quality time with your loved ones–that won’t break the bank!
