Here at BLINQ, April is our favorite time of year because it’s Earth Month! Earth Month is a celebration to honor our beautiful planet and to support healthy environmental practices. There are many ways to get involved and do your part this Earth Month before Earth Day on April 22 and we’ve gathered some of our favorites for you to try.
If you haven’t heard this before, eating less meat is one of the biggest ways you can reduce your personal carbon emissions. That’s because according to Union of Concerned Scientists, the food sector accounts for 14% of U.S. global warming emissions, mostly due to meat. Beef is the biggest culprit because of the large amount of methane (a greenhouse gas) they produce.
Really challenge yourself and try eating less meat throughout April. If you want to start off small, take a break from meat once a week—#MeatlessMonday has recently become a ‘thing’ on social media. You can even shop your local farmers market for amazing and fresh fruits and veggies to power your recipes.
Here are some delicious meat-free dishes to get you inspired:
Reduce energy consumption
This one may seem obvious but energy is definitely something we tend to take for granted. There are a few small tweaks you can make to lower your energy consumption this month (and hopefully moving forward), and hey, you’ll probably save a couple bucks on your utility bill as well!
- Unplug and shut down your computer at night
- If you’re not charging your phone or laptop or other electronic device, unplug the charger
- This one is easy: shut the light off when you leave a room
- Replace your light bulbs with energy efficient LED
- Use powerstrips for multiple electronics
And while you’re in the habit of saving energy, save water too! For the entire month of April, try turning off the water when you brush your teeth. In the shower, try cutting down your time by just 2 minutes.
Take a tour of a local recycling facility and set a plan in place
Take a trip to the recycling center closest to you. Most facilities offer really fun and interactive tours and it’s a great excuse to get out for a couple of hours!
After the tour, you should be feeling excited and inspired from the experience, so capitalize on that momentum and create a recycling plan for your home or even office. Consult with your office manager and see if it’s possible to get bins in the kitchen. Then host an informal info session to explain what items go in each recycling receptacle. You can even make it a competition between teams and provide prizes for those who recycle the most!
Volunteer your time with a local organization
Earth Month is a great time of year to volunteer with grassroots organizations that are working hard to preserve natural resources and ensure environmental protection. Here are some fun and engaging ways you can get involved.
- Plant a tree
- Find a beach or park clean up
- Start a vegetable garden
- Connect with local farms
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again—single-use plastic takes a giant toll on our planet as those items end up in landfills and oceans when they are not properly recycled. Reducing your plastic consumption is one of the easiest ways you can lower your impact.
As a sustainable brand, BLINQ values smarter shopping! When you shop with companies that make an effort to reduce waste or help the environment you can feel good about your purchase.. Most items on our website are overstock or returned goods that would have otherwise been tossed—regardless of the condition they are in! That means every time you shop on BLINQ, you’re doing your part to help reduce waste. We aren’t the only pro-sustainability company out there, though. You can find sustainable alternatives for any kind of service, store, or product; just do your research and shop with brands that aim to do a little more good.
However you decide to celebrate this Earth Month, we guarantee you that our awesome planet (and us!) will appreciate it! Use April as an opportunity to implement eco-friendly or low waste habits that will eventually become long-term lifestyle changes. It’s important that we take the time to learn about the environment but it’s our actions and small changes that really make the difference. Happy Earth Month!
