Halloween is right around the corner, y’all! Here at BLINQ, we love getting into the holiday spirit by finding the most funny and unique costumes — some people even flaunt theirs around the office! But my very favorite part of the season has to be finding an adorable costume for my dog. There are just so many great Halloween dog costume ideas out there that it can sometimes be difficult to choose just one!
If you, too, will be shopping for your furry friends this season, use these tips to help your pooch’s personality shine on October 31 (or year-round) in the perfect costume.
Think About Your Dog’s Personality
First, you have to know your pet’s personality. My dog is a Rott/Hound mix, so he’s a fairly big boy. But he thinks he’s a lap dog — he’s pretty chill, and just likes to lay around and get petted. So, I don’t usually put him in elaborate or uncomfortable costumes because I know that’s not his style and he just won’t like it. And that’s ok; not every dog wants to be the life of the party.
By understanding your dog’s personality and what they like and don’t like, you’ll have a better shot at coming up with a Halloween dog costume that they’ll actually enjoy wearing!
Train Your Dog to Wear Clothes Early
Spoiler alert: dogs are not used to wearing clothes. But if you train your dog to wear clothes when they’re young, they’ll be more willing to wear them as adults. If you don’t, you could have problems getting your dog to cooperate when you try to get them into that Halloween costume this year. For example, my dog is pretty good about wearing shirts and jackets, because I put them on him as a pup. But forget about getting him to wear a hat — it just isn’t going to happen!
Find the Perfect Fit
You don’t want to get an outfit that’s too big, too small or just plain uncomfortable. Make sure to measure around both the neck and midsection before you consult the sizing guide for the costume. Your dog is more likely to keep on a costume that fits than one that’s baggy or too tight.
Bonus Tip: BLINQ.com offers free and easy returns, just in case that costume doesn’t quite fit!
Consider Tees and Jerseys
I know you probably want to cram your dog into that too-cute T-Rex outfit, but some dogs just aren’t feeling the prehistoric vibe and will certainly make that known. If you have trouble keeping an elaborate costume on your pup, there are other great dog costume ideas like a lighter-weight t-shirt or team jersey. As an added bonus, you’ll easily get more than one wear out of your pup’s costume!
