What Does Open Box Mean?

As part of the Customer Care Team, one of the most common questions I receive is, “What really is an ‘Open Box – Like New’ item?” The BLINQ.com FAQ page will tell you that these products look and feel brand new, but the packaging may show signs of wear.

what is open box

But why is the packaging worn? Where has the product been? Will the product be damaged? If the box is open, is it new, and will it be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty? Stay tuned, I have your answers.

The Basics

First, let’s delve into the appearance and functionality of open-box items. Once items arrive at the BLINQ warehouse, our dedicated team tests and inspects them. Items categorized as open box fit the following criteria:

  • They show no signs of use or wear
  • They include all major accessories
  • They are fully operational
  • They are in the original retail packaging, but the packaging is worn, damaged, or unsealed

You’re essentially getting a brand new product, but at a steep discount because of the packaging.

Why has the packaging been unsealed or damaged?

The answer varies, but most commonly are the following explanations:

  • The item was purchased previously, but returned within the retailer’s return period without damage or wear.
(This is often due to reasons such as buyer’s remorse. For instance, a customer purchases a Macbook Pro, but they decide they want a Macbook Air instead. Or a customer orders a size 8 dress, but they need a size 6.)
  • The item’s packaging was dented on the shelf or in transit, but the item itself is in perfect condition.
  • The item was used as a floor model by the previous retailer.

Will the manufacturer’s warranty apply?

Well, this varies too. Each manufacturer’s policy is different, and each product has taken a unique journey. For the products that have been previously purchased, their warranty may have expired depending on how much time has lapsed since the initial transaction. Some manufacturers won’t cover products sold in a secondary marketplace. That’s perfectly normal.

The great news is that all items are covered by our BLINQ Promise, with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if there’s any issue with the product — even if you simply don’t like it — you can send it back to us for a full refund.

So, why buy open box?

There are so many great reasons to consider buying open box. To start, buying open box is a more sustainable way to shop, since you’re continuing the lifecycle of perfectly awesome products–and ultimately keeping them from potentially ending up in landfills.

Shopping open box is also an extremely easy way to save money on all kinds of items. But don’t take it from us–we asked The Rich Miser, an expert on getting the most out of his money, his opinion on buying open box: “As I see it, you don’t buy a product for the box, just like you don’t order a meal at a restaurant for the plate, or a drink at a bar for the glass,” he says. “There’s no point in paying more for an intact box, when the product inside works the same.”

Or take it from a BLINQ customer, Alexander, from Ithaca, NY, who purchased a pair of open-box headphones: “BLINQ’s open-box deal was a significant saving with literally no difference compared to a new product, except the seal was broken.”

I hope this answers your questions about buying ‘open box’. I guarantee you’re going to get a fantastic deal by purchasing an open-box item from BLINQ!

I bought a open box like new motherboard from blinq that was DOA. I was excited to get a great motherboard at half price but as I opened it I could see the cpu socket pins were not just bent they were smashed down and mangled so bad there was no point in trying it. Disappointed I just put it back in the box. I am currently in the process of returning the item. I hope I get my refund asap as I have all my computer parts except the motherboard.
There is no way this board was tested before shipping and you cant tell me that it could have been damaged during shipping because the box it was shipped in was 5X bigger and full of padding. As this is my first experience with blinq I cant say I would purchase from them again.
